| Over the past
few centuries, human activity has increasingly altered the ecosystems
of the world. The most notable effect of society on the environment
is land use, whereby the natural environment is altered in order for
us to survive. Although land use is not a feature of the environment
as such, it represents the current status of the land surface as a
whole, and therefore reflects the condition of the environment. With
the rapid urbanisation and the escalating demands of urban development
both locally and globally, the need for sound environmental management
has been accentuated. While humans have imposed many undesirable and
unexpected changes on the environment, we have the capacity to modify
the rate of such changes or to reverse these actions. We at Lokisa
believe that by providing a pro-active
service through environmental assessments, there is
some basis for hope that humans can be reconciled with the environment.
